Local Design Teams Claim iF Design Award

The brainchild of a design team from Taipei has been named one of the winners at the “iF Concept Design Award 2012” in Germany. This is the third time for the work to claim another title after it was recognized at both the “2011 Taipei Industrial Design Award” and the “Red Dot Award 2011: Design Concept”.

The winning work “A.C.R.” is a vest-like automated cardiopulmonary resuscitator designed by a Taiwanese team from Shih Chien University. Team members include Chen Kuei-yuan, Hsu Hao-ming, Tsai Cheng-yu, Tay Pek-khai, and Chen Yi-teng.

A.C.R. can be installed at public spaces for emergency use – similar to hydrants or distinguishers during a fire. With easy instructions, the equipment can be put on to the wounded for first aid to boost his/her chances of survival. In the case of a major disaster, A.C.R. can be employed to treat patients when no professional rescuers can be reached.

Dubbed the “Design Oscar,” iF is one of the long-standing design competitions in the world, on a par with reddot (Germany), IDEA (USA), and G-Mark (Japan). Among the 10,665 works from over 50 countries submitted this year, Taiwanese designers claimed 27 out of the 100 awards available. Among these winning works, 16 were from Taipei; the pieces are testimonies to the design prowess of both the capital city and the island.

To drive the momentum of Taipei’s bid for the World Design Capital 2016, the Department of Economic Development announced that starting 2012, the Taipei Industrial Design Award will be renamed “Taipei Design Award,” seeking to uncover more design talent by expanding the competition’s scope.
