City Offers Subsidy for Overhaul of Old Apartments

To provide a chance for residents to restore their old buildings and to give the city a more beautiful appearance, Taipei City Government began offering subsidies for restoration of old houses in 2006.

Starting in 2009, the subsidy granted was further increased to cover 75 percent of overall construction cost in selected cases (the cap remains at 45 percent for cases in general areas – and both with NT$10 million as the limit). This led to an increase of the number of applications.

According to the Urban Redevelopment Office (URO), the subsidy is not restricted to restoring the appearance of the edifice; it could also be applied to renovation works ranging from structural safety reinforcement to design fees for related constructions.

The agency noted that to allow more residents to apply for the funding, it has expanded the types of applicable renovations, including refurbishment of buildings under seven stories, installation of universal access facilities (including elevators), and others.

The deadline for this year’s subsidy application is June 30. URO reported that it has accepted a total of 59 cases, setting a new record. The application for subsidies for 2012 will be available early next year at the agency’s website (www.uro.taipei.gov.tw), or call URO at 02-2321-5696.
