Japanese Challengers Set New Guinness Record in Taipei

A mixed team comprising members from Junior Chamber International Japan (JCIJ) Tokai Division and local youth successfully set a Guinness World Record for the largest number of participants in a three-legged race on June 5.

The group consisting of 474 individuals from Japan and 128 locals completed a 50-meter three-legged race in roughly 20 minutes at the Guanshan Riverside Park in Taipei. After arriving at the goal and double-checking that the record has been verified, the participants let out a roaring cheer to celebrate the historical moment.

Before the event, the Guinness record for the most participants in a multi-legged race was held by Kyoto Gakuen’s students, who established the record on September 19, 2011 in a race with 324 runners.

According to Guinness World Record adjudicator Carlos Martinez, the participants formed a human line stretching 350 meters and covered 50 meters in their attempt without anyone falling over. Given the muddy terrain at the venue, he praised the participants for their determination and congratulated them for setting this new record.

Following the race, the adjudicator presented the certificate to the Japanese delegation’s leader Kato, who in turn presented it to Department of Information and Tourism Deputy Commissioner Chiu Peng-hsin and expressed his gratitude to all those who provided assistance to make this attempt possible.
