City Gears up for Flood Season

Mayor Hau Lung-bin made an inspection trip to a pumping facility on Shezi Island and received a briefing on flood control preparation from the officials of the Hydraulic Engineering Office (HEO) in the morning of May 4.

He noted that the flood season has arrived on May 1, and while Taipei City has not suffered significant damage at this point, the city staff is prepared to take all necessary measures to protect and safeguard the well being of local residents.

Accompanied by Deputy Secretary-general Tsai Huei-sheng, the mayor arrived at the pumping station at 8 AM. Following a brief inspection, the mayor instructed the staff of the station to be flexible on the use of portable pumps and be prepared to provide assistance upon being notified by the 1999 Citizen Hotline.

HEO Director Eric Huang pointed out that the water level of the rivers in Taipei’s vicinity is kept under around-the-clock surveillance through a network comprising 157 monitoring stations and other facilities.

Public Works Commissioner Lee Hsien-heng remarked that starting July last year, his agency is working closely with both the Fire Department and the Department of Environmental Protection; when the Weather Bureau dispatches torrential rain advisory, the three agencies will move ahead to check citywide drainage functions – from sewers to cesspools.
