City Launches Day Care Centers for Disabled

The Department of Social Welfare (DSW) announced that a total of 101 courses are now available for registration at the city’s six Disability Resource Centers on May 3. Participants will have a chance of bringing home prizes such as iPad2, wii fit, and 42-inch LCD screens.

According to a survey, more than 50% disabled residents neither work nor attend school; they have no choice but to stay at home during the day. To help them reconnect with society, DSW established a “LOHAS Station”at each Disability Resource Center, providing day care and self enhancement classes for the physically challenged.

As Social Welfare Commissioner Chiang Yi-wen pointed out, care for the disabled lays a burden upon their families. The establishment of the social welfare facility aims at relieving some of the stress upon the family members of disabled individuals. In the meantime, these individuals will be well taken care of when they visit these institutions; they can also use the centers as a place to learn and do activities.

Between May 3 and July 2, disabled citizens who have established residency in Taipei City are eligible to enter a raffle by signing up for any two of the aforementioned classes. The agency welcomes residents to visit any of the six Disability Resource Centers to have a photo taken with the cardboard cut-out at the venue; by uploading such photos to facebook, they are eligible to receive a souvenir.
