Mayor Visits Winning Community of Energy Conservation Contest

Mayor Hau Lung-bin arrived at the gates of Wanhua’s “Metropolis Garden” residential community on May 3 for a short visit. The community was the winner in the inaugural Taipei Golden Saving Award organized by the city government.

Hau noted that the advantages of having communities adopt energy-saving policies include not only raising the living standards of the neighborhood, but also helping the individual households save money through reducing utility consumption.

The city has established consultant teams to offer advice on carbon emission and energy consumption reduction-related advice to residents for free. In 2011 alone, the teams worked with 102 communities across the city, saving nearly 45,000 kWh of electricity.

According to Huang Kuo-ching, chairman of the Metropolis Garden community committee, the priority of the community’s energy-reduction measure is to implement ones that are either free or cost-efficient before considering installing expensive gears.

He cited arrangement such as keeping only one out of the two elevators in operation during off-peak hours, installing window blinds in the main lobby to reduce the need for air conditioning, and replacing traditional light bulbs with LED ones to cut electricity consumptions as best practices adopted by the community.

The city government is holding the fifth Taipei Golden Saving Award this year. The winners will be announced in June.
