Guam Governor Pays Courtesy Call on Taipei City Mayor

Eddie Calvo, the governor of Guam, visited Taipei City Hall on April 18. He met with Mayor Hau Lung-bin and discussed topics ranging from environmental protection to education.

The delegation headed by the governor consisted of 22 members. After welcoming the guests to Taipei, Hau provided the visitors with a briefing on the background of the city.

Calvo noted that this is the second time he met Mayor Hau. Comparing Guam with Taipei, the governor noted that the island has many things to learn from Taipei – especially how the city is able to keep the amount of waste material production to only twice of Guam – one being a territory with 170,000 inhabitants while the other being a population center with nearly 2.6 million residents.

On the topic of tourism, the visiting governor noted that many Taiwanese travel to Guam for vacations, which plays an important role in the economy of the Pacific island. He remarked that Taipei is working on an exchange learning program for high school students with English-speaking countries and noted that Guam is willing to participate in the project.

Guam is one of the sister cities of Taipei City. The sister city relationship was established in 1973. Calvo invited Hau to visit Guam next year to celebrate the 40th anniversary of sister city relationship.
