Dutch City Supports Taipei’s Bid for Design Capital

In a meeting with Mayor Hau Lung-bin on April 16, Rob van Gijzel, Mayor of the Dutch city Eindhoven, invited Taipei to attend “Dutch Design Week” this October to boost its momentum in bidding for the title of 2016 World Design Capital.

Gijzel is in Taipei to ink a Memorandum of Understanding between the two cities in addition to signing up for support of Taipei’s drive to become the design capital. He also held a lecture on Eindhoven’s experience as a city thriving with design activity.

Gijzel proposed that Eindhoven plans to incorporate “Night of Taipei” as one of the highlights during Dutch Design Week, so as to raise the profile of the capital of the island. Hau expressed his sincere gratitude for the generous offer and support.

The Dutch mayor and Representative of Netherlands Trade & Investment Office (NTIO) in Taiwan Hans Fortuin also suggested encompassing the concepts of green energy and sustainable development into Taipei’s application statement.

Apart from that, the two sides both showed interest in an artist exchange program, in which two Dutch designers are to become “artists in residence” in Taipei Artist Village while Taipei artists will be invited to Eindhoven as well.
