Tour de Taiwan 2012 Kicks off in Taipei City

Deputy Mayor Tim Ting joined Executive Yuan Vice Premier Jiang Yi-huah and Sports Affairs Council Minister Tai Hsia-ling in sounding the starter pistol for the first race of the Tour de Taiwan 2012 in front of city hall on March 10.

Attracting 95 cyclists from 22 countries around the world, this year’s competition has received an upgrade from the International Cycling Union (UCI) – from Class 2.2 to Class 2.1 road race.

On behalf of the city government, Ting welcomed the athletes to Taipei City and invited them to experience the friendliness and hospitality of locals during their stay on the island. He also led the athletes during the warm-up lap, introducing them to the shaded boulevard along Renai Road and the historical East (Jingfu) Gate.

Jiang pointed out that the country is honored to host its first Class 2.1 tour. He wished the best for the athletes, and hoped that they will have a chance to enjoy the delicious food, beautiful scenes, and friendly people of Taiwan during the competition.

Tai remarked that with the Tour de Taiwan, local cycling fans will not have to travel to countries such as Italy or France to enjoy a world-class cycling tournament.

The Tour de Taiwan 2012 comprises of 7 stages: Taipei City, New Taipei City, Taoyuan County, Taichung City, Changhua County, Tainan City, and Kaohsiung City. The race in Taipei City is the only city criterium stage in the 7-day-long race spanning over 866 kilometers.
