Angel’s Day at Yuanshan Park

To promote acceptance of children with disabilities in the society, Angel Heart Family Social Welfare Foundation will be holding 336 Angel’s Day (336 means the third Saturday in March) event on March 17 in Taipei and Kaohsiung. The public are invited to join families with physically or mentally challenged kids on a sunny day and show their support.

Unlike previous events, this year Angel’s Day will feature a Street of Joy where artists and cultural groups perform to create a carnival atmosphere; a Station of Love set up by social welfare institutes which provide information on disabilities and hands-on activities; and a Concert for Angels staged by pop singer Jay Chou among other entertainers. The event will take place at Yuanshan Park.

According to the organizer, there will be 168 families with disabled children as well as 168 normal families attending the event. Participants will join hands in taking an oath that they will accept each other and offer help for those in need. The award-winning lyricist Vincent Fang, known for his poetic lyrics, will be invited to compose the “Declaration of Embracing Love” for Angel’s Day.

Speaking of the origin of Angel’s Day, CEO of the Foundation Lin Chao-cheng cited the story of his developmentally-delayed daughter being discriminated on a plane. Believing that understanding is the first step towards acceptance, Lin initiated the annual event in 2010, hoping to raise public awareness on what families with disabled kids are like.
