Number of Cyclists Taking MRT Sets New Record

For the upcoming 228 holiday weekend, Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation (TRTC) encourages residents to bring their bicycles with them when they take the MRT to the great outdoors.

According to the company, the number of passengers bringing bicycles onto the MRT during February this year grew by about 44 percent when compared to the same period in 2011. This shows that the public is becoming more aware and taking advantage of the policy of TRTC of opening up the MRT system to bicycles during holiday weekends.

On February 5, 2012, TRTC opened up additional MRT stations to bicycle access on the weekends – boosting the number of such stations from 33 to 67. Since the implementation of the policy, the MRT has seen an average of 777 passengers with bicycles on holidays with bicycle access.

Regarding the fare for passengers with bicycles, a single trip ticket for rider and bicycle is NTD80 for all destinations. The ticket can be bought at the information counter at the gates and need to be returned upon exiting the station. In addition to all stops along MRT Wenhu Line, the following MRT stations do not offer bicycle access: MRT Tamsui Station, MRT Shipai Station, MRT Jiantan Station, MRT Taipei Main Station, MRT NTU Hospital Station, MRT Guting Station, MRT Zhongxiao Fuxing Station, MRT Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center Station, and MRT Fu Jen University Station.

TRTC reminds cyclists that March 3 will be a make-up day for the 228 holiday weekend. As a regular workday, the MRT will not be opening up the trains to bicycles on the Saturday.
